An alternative, but on the American side this time, is to go down near the falls. Then take a wooden plank trail to get as close as possible to the power of Niagara Falls. Here again raincoats are provided and you have to be careful with your equipment. As this is an activity on the American side of the falls, and if you are coming from Canada, you will have to cross the bridge connecting the two countries. And therefore go through customs. In the Niagara Falls Wine Tours you will be getting all the information now.
Getting to Niagara Falls
Horseshoe Falls, in the shape of a horseshoe
In the following paragraphs, I discuss the practical side of accessing this Niagara Falls site.
We made a day trip round trip to the falls from Toronto, but there are different alternatives.
Where are the falls?
Niagara Falls is located on the Niagara River, in the city of Niagara-Falls . This river separates two large lakes in North America: Lake Ontario and Lake Erie . It also partly marks the border between Canada and the United States.
Niagara Falls is therefore on the border between these two countries. It is thus possible to go to the Canadian part of the falls, or to the American part. The falls are nevertheless known to be more beautiful on the Canadian side than on the American side.
Niagara Falls, on the border of Ontario (Canada) and New York State (USA)
Note that once at the falls, on the Canada side, it is possible to go to the American side to admire the falls from different angles. There is just a bridge to cross, but you will have to go through customs and passport control and ESTA, which can be time consuming.
On a road trip
During a road trip, the easiest way to get to the falls in my opinion is to leave from Toronto . Indeed the falls are located about 120 km from this Canadian megalopolis , to the south.
Some practical information about Niagara Falls
Niagara Falls is actually a set of several falls:
- the American Falls, which are quite straight.
- the Canadian Falls, which are rounded in the shape of a horseshoe.
- as well as the tiny drop from the Bridal Veil.
The falls form a stunning natural border between Canada and the United States, located on either side of the Niagara River. We can of course enjoy the view from both shores but the view from the Canadian side is often considered the most beautiful since the falls are directly in front of us! They are very accessible from downtown Niagara Falls. You just have to descend along Clifton Hill and its unusual attractions to find Queen Victoria Park which runs along the river and the falls.Niagara Falls in March, just before the snowmelt.
How long does it take to visit Niagara Falls?
It all depends on what you plan to do there! Overall, the range of visits to the falls can vary from a few hours to 2 days. It is possible to consider an express passage of an hour or two if you are really in a hurry. Without any additional activity, it is possible to walk along the falls and take wonderful photos, all for free.
For me, the best alternative is to spend a full day there , as well as a night: you can walk quietly along the falls, consider one or two activities such as cruising and / or climbing to the observatory of the Skylon Tower. You can then end your day in the Clifton Hill area and enjoy all the flamboyant hustle and bustle of Niagara Falls (and probably have a great time with the family!). While sleeping in Niagara Falls, it also leaves the opportunity to enjoy the falls at night : the latter are lit up every night and one can even witness fireworks during the summer season.
